Tazewell County, VA Redistricting Vote Information
Think for a moment, If you were in a football game and the opposing team up and moved their goalpost to their 20 yardline, Would YOU still be willing to "play by the rules"??
Tazewell County,
Virginia has been allowed to begin early voting March 6 – April 18
on a Tuesday, April 21, 2026 referendum allowing voters to decide
whether to adopt new congressional map lines.
(Note: If you plan
to vote by mail-in ballot, be aware you must now go to a US Postal
Service window and have your ballot envelope hand-stamped with the
postmark date. Otherwise, it may be counted as received too late and
not count as a valid vote on April 21.)
In Virginia, a
constitutional amendment must be put before voters as a referendum* to allow the General Assembly to temporarily redraw the state’s
congressional district map lines* before the usual once-a-decade
schedule. Normally, districts are drawn after the federal census, but
several states, led by Texas and followed by California, Missouri,
North Carolina and Ohio, have recently changed their congressional
maps mid-cycle to gain a Republican advantage in the battle for
control of the US House of Representatives. For supporters of this
Virginia amendment, a vote “yes” for new maps will help balance
representation of Virginia voters if other states’ changes shift
political power. Critics say changing districts outside the usual
process raises legal and constitutional questions.
There are multiple
lawsuits challenging parts of this vote and the process used to put
it on the ballot. The Virginia Supreme Court has ruled that the
election can move forward while legal challenges continue. The Court
has also said it will issue final decisions after the April 21 vote.
This means results could still be reviewed or changed depending on
how court cases are decided.
